2024 New Year-New You

Happy New Year! Are you excited for 2024? I know I am.

Why? Because I got BIG plans I tell ya!

I’m not talking about RESOLUTIONS…although that is a pretty great word.

Resolution: To make a strong decision.

That sounds powerful right? Like Gandalf slamming his staff into the ground magic.

“I resolve to cut out sugar and actually visit the gym I pay for each month!”

But if it’s such a powerful and magical word then why do so many of us, like myself, fall short?

Because when I make a New Year Resolution, it’s usually something like, ‘lose weight’ or ‘make more money’.

It’s too vague and there is no structure or direction.

I don’t know about you but when I take a trip I like to plan it out…

The destination, the dates, means of travel, accomodations, what I’m packinig, etc…

Now that doesn’t mean EVERYTHING is planned but there is a structure and there are some strict timelines involved.

With the losing weight or earning more money, it’s so vague and unfocused the Universe doesn’t know what I want.

Do I want to lose 1 pound or 20? How do I want to lose it? More importantly, will it find me again?!

I always say when you deal with the Universe you have to be clear. I once asked for more money and found a nickel!

Well played Universe, well played.

So if I were creating a better resolution, this is how mine would go.

My plan is to improve my health, strength and physique.

I’m not interested in numbers on a scale but rather the ability to walk, hike or jog easily

without becoming severely out of breath or injuring myself…or others!

The activities will be inspired and fun; like yoga in the morning for 15 minutes, dancing to music during breaks and keeping my dumbells handy for arm curls between calls.

Keeping the routine minimal and enjoyable will help create a daily habit that I can add to or modify as I go.

I can meal prep on the weekends. I won’t restrict my food choices but focus on choosing healthier food items first.

I’ll also make meditation a morning/nightly activity to increase my emotional health.

Voila! A plan aka RESOLUTION.

Now you might not have noticed but I didn’t mention anything about weight check ins, calorie counting or severe lifestyle changes.

I’m not going to focus on anything detracting from my goal, which is a positive. You see my goal changed from

‘lose weight’

to ‘GET HEALTHY!’

Sure, pounds will be lost but by not focusing on the unwanted – the extra weight – and only the wanted – better health

I’m less likely to get bored, frustrated, resentful or just plain give up.

Tell me in the Comments if you have a resolution or if you’re like me…more than one!

My last bit of advice is to have your WHY be authentic and honest to yourself.

My resolution isn’t to look more attractive on the outside to other people,

yes I have my insecurities in that department and it would be great but

true self worth truly comes from within.

My WHY is I’ve noticed certain activities I really enjoy

are not so enjoyable since I started working from home and being less active.

Activities like…moving.

It’s easy to apply this method to any other goal like money, career, relationship, etc…

I hope this was helpful, at the very least I hope it made you think differently about New Year Resolutions.
